S A R A H_ LU C A S

Sarah Lucas was born in 1962, studied at Goldsmiths, and was part of the 1988 Freeze group art show. She now lives and works in Suffolk. Her work often uses ‘readymade’ items from cigarettes to nylon tights, and now found flint parts and organic elements thrown up to the surface of fields. Lucas’s work is characterized ‘by confrontational humour, sexual puns, and an ironic exploration of Englishness’.

Perceval, her life-sized mantelpiece ornament of a shire horse and cart, currently based at Snape, is the perfect embodiment of this humour and a take on English nostalgia. Female and male sexual forms are often represented, and her play on words in titles is part of the whole. Most recently she returned from a trip to Auckland where she exhibited NUDS, sculptures made from found local objects including sheep skulls and rocks. Sarah Lucas is represented by Sadie Coles HQ.
